Laser hair removal

Am I suitable for laser hair removal?

Your first session will be a free consultation and patch test. We use our digital skin analyser to determine your skin type and suitability for laser hair removal.

During your consultation we will explain the treatment procedure in full to ensure you are happy to proceed. We will discuss a treatment plan to make sure you receive the best results. We will also discuss pre-treatment and aftercare during the consultation.

How does it work?

Selective thermolysis is when specially selected wavelengths of laser light are pulsed into the skin and absorbed by the dark pigment (melanin) in the hair shaft. This light energy is converted into heat which is transferred into the hair follicle damaging the follicle and inhibiting future hair growth. Up to a maximum of 30% of follicles can be terminated per treatment. This is why a minimum of 6 treatments are needed.

How many treatments will I need?

The biological process of hair growth cycles determines that a minimum of 6 treatments are required.

Different human factors and clinical indications can require further treatments.

6-10 treatments are recommended depending on the skin type, hair growth and other hormonal factors.

How should I prepare for laser?

Arrive at your appointment on time.

Make sure the skin is clean and free from any lotions, oils or perfume on the area being treated.

Wear light coloured clothing as dark clothing fibres attract the laser.

Do not expose the treated area to the sun or a sun bed before treatment.

A sunscreen of at least SPF30 (preferably SPF50) should be applied whenever exposure to the sun is unavoidable.

Shave the area being treated the day before.

This is very important!

Doing this will prevent thermal injury to the surface of the skin as there won’t be any hair on the surface to absorb laser energy and will allow the laser to go directly to the hair follicle.

It will also give the skin a chance to recover after shaving the day before.

Is there any aftercare advice?

Aftercare will be thoroughly explained during your consultation and treatment.

Avoid hot baths and showers for 2 days after treatment.

Avoid exposing the treated skin to sunlight or sunbeds or self-tan for at least 2 weeks after treatment to minimise the chance of hyperpigmentation.

Apply aloe vera to the area that has been treated.

Do I have to grow my hair?

No. You shave the day before treatment and can shave as much as you want in between (although you’ll need to do a lot less).

Does it work on light hair?

Laser works best on dark hair (dark brown or black). Laser is attracted to pigment. The more pigment, the more successful the treatment will be.

Does it hurt?

It’s uncomfortable. The laser is effectively ‘cooking’ the follicles to kill them. It feels like hot zaps. We use ice to help with discomfort.

Can I have laser with a fake tan on?

This is a hard no with fake tan. It could burn your skin and cause pigmentation. Tan needs to be off 2 weeks before treatment. Gradual tan is still fake tan.

Is it permanent?

Yes. Laser is permanent hair reduction. Expect to reduce hair by 70-95%. Hair can be stimulated to grow in empty follicles due to hormones, stress and lifestyle so top ups may be required.

I’ve booked a holiday. How does it affect my laser sessions?

We’d recommend having your session 2 weeks before you go and then waiting until your tan has fully faded before your next session. It may mean we stretch that session out an extra few weeks.
